{"id":9375,"date":"2018-05-15T06:54:52","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T06:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/shipip\/?p=9375"},"modified":"2018-05-15T06:54:52","modified_gmt":"2018-05-15T06:54:52","slug":"paris-mou-will-take-new-sulfur-limits-seriously-from-day-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/developmenttask.com\/ShipIpLtd\/paris-mou-will-take-new-sulfur-limits-seriously-from-day-one\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris MoU will take new sulfur limits seriously &#8220;from day one&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Paris MOU on Port State Control is warning that it intends to enforce new international regulations limiting the amount of sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships from \u201cday one\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The warning comes in anticipation of the International Maritime Organization\u2019s low sulphur fuel rule which is to take effect on January 1, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>During the Paris MOU\u2019s 51st Committee meeting held last week, Paris MoU agreed to an information campaign aimed at encouraging timely compliance the regulation. The campaign will include a \u201cLetter of Warning\u201d starting 1 January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Paris MOU Secretary General Richard Schiferli said he intends the warning to serve as a signal to the industry that port state control will take enforcement of the new sulphur limits seriously from \u201cday one\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Paris MOU, which covers Europe and the North Atlantic, is one of nine Port State Control regimes around the world responsible for carrying out inspections on vessels to monitor and enforce compliance with international regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The IMO\u2019s upcoming low sulphur fuel requirement will lower the sulphur content limit of marine fuels globally from 3.5% currently to just .5% beginning on January 1, 2020. The IMO has warned that it expects immediate compliance with the new regulations and any ships not meeting the low sulphur requirement could be deemed \u201cunseaworthy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To comply with the rule, ships will need to either burn higher cost low sulphur bunker fuel, use an exhaust gas \u201cscrubber\u201d system, or be converted or built for alternative fuel such as liquified natural gas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Paris MOU on Port State Control is warning that it intends to enforce new international regulations limiting the amount of sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships from \u201cday one\u201d.
