{"id":21994,"date":"2022-09-05T15:33:07","date_gmt":"2022-09-05T15:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shipip.com\/?p=21994"},"modified":"2022-09-05T15:33:07","modified_gmt":"2022-09-05T15:33:07","slug":"new-zealand-hybrid-ferries-to-be-powered-by-man-energy-solutions-engine-generators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/developmenttask.com\/ShipIpLtd\/new-zealand-hybrid-ferries-to-be-powered-by-man-energy-solutions-engine-generators\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand hybrid ferries to be powered by MAN Energy Solutions engine generators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Zealand\u2019s largest rail transport operator,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/kiwirail\/\">KiwiRail<\/a>, announced earlier this month that it has selected our MAN 32\/44CR engine to generate power onboard its new hybrid-electric fleet arriving from 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The new ferries will move people and freight between New Zealand\u2019s two main islands and are part of the Inter-island Resilient Connection (iReX) programme.<\/p>\n<p>iReX is a USD 1.45 billion investment which will see KiwiRail\u2019s two new, rail-enabled ferries coming into service in 2025 and 2026, and the construction of new terminal precincts in Waitohi Picton and Kaiwharawhara Wellington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe MAN 32\/44CR four-stroke engine has proven itself over approximately 3 million hours of operating experience,\u201d said iReX Ships Programme Manager\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAVZMGsBZZk9YzGry4eImaJozq_6Z9wwTY0\">Massimo Soprano<\/a>. \u201cManufactured in Germany, these engines are highly efficient and will support KiwiRail\u2019s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new ferries, which are being built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, will be more efficient and support KiwiRail\u2019s goal to reduce carbon emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 and be carbon neutral by 2050.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAB-TaaIB2IXKuAIjAuAjxW_DCyY3jLqFIOc\">Elvis Ettenhofer<\/a>, Head of Marine Four-stroke Asia Pacific at MAN Energy Solutions says the robust design of the MAN 32\/44CR makes it well-suited for the demanding applications shuttling passengers and rail cars between New Zealand\u2019s island groups.<br \/>\nHe said: \u201cI\u2019m very happy to see it chosen for a project of national significance to New Zealanders.
