{"id":21415,"date":"2022-09-01T14:55:50","date_gmt":"2022-09-01T14:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shipip.com\/?p=21415"},"modified":"2022-09-01T14:55:50","modified_gmt":"2022-09-01T14:55:50","slug":"china-india-spar-over-controversial-ships-call-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/developmenttask.com\/ShipIpLtd\/china-india-spar-over-controversial-ships-call-in-sri-lanka\/","title":{"rendered":"China, India Spar Over Controversial Ship\u2019s Call in Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Subhadip Sircar (Bloomberg) \u2013India and China traded insults over their diverging interests in Sri Lanka, after a controversial Chinese scientific research ship\u00a0called\u00a0at the island nation despite New Delhi\u2019s security concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka \u201cneeds support, not unwanted pressure or unnecessary controversies to serve another country\u2019s agenda,\u201d the Indian embassy in Colombo said on\u00a0Twitter\u00a0late Saturday, referencing the ongoing political and economic turmoil\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/bankrupt-sri-lanka-takes-russia-oil-as-fuel-crisis-persists\/\">the nation is already battling after defaulting on its debt<\/a>\u00a0for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka tweeted that the South Asian country had every right to approve a foreign vessel docking at its port.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExternal obstruction based on so-called \u2018security concerns\u2019 but without any evidence from certain forces is de facto a thorough interference into Sri Lanka\u2019s sovereignty and independence,\u201d the Chinese mission wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome countries, far or near, always make groundless excuses to bully Sri Lanka, and trample on Sri Lanka\u2019s sovereignty and independence repeatedly,\u201d it said, without directly naming India.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka cleared the Yuan Wang 5 to dock at the Hambantota port from Aug. 16 to 22 after initially deferring a request from the Chinese embassy to allow the ship a call in mid-August for replenishment purposes.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s Ministry of External Affairs said last month that the ship\u2019s movements could have a bearing on its security and economic interests.<\/p>\n<p>The Hambantota port that the vessel stopped at has been plagued by controversy, with the Sri Lankan government having to borrow heavily to construct it.
