Source: Erwin Willemse\/Marine Traffic.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\n<p>Underpayment of crew and poor working conditions have led to the banning of a Liberian-flagged oil tanker,\u00a0<em>Neptune,<\/em>\u00a0from Australian ports for six months.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0receiving a complaint regarding the underpayment of seafarers and welfare issues, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa) inspected the ship in the Port of Gladstone, in central Queensland and found evidence that the employment agreement with 21 seafarers on\u00a0board the ship had not been met and the crew members were collectively owed approximately AUD$123\u00a0000 (R1\u00a0431\u00a0403.89).<\/p>\n<div class=\"revive-item\"><ins id=\"revive-0-2\" data-revive-id=\"5aab8581fc0b61410f72c153e0e71db5\" data-revive-zoneid=\"446\" data-revive-seq=\"2\" data-revive-loaded=\"1\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"beacon_a4d962cd5c\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nmas.nowmedia.co.za\/www\/delivery\/lg.php?bannerid=0&amp;campaignid=0&amp;zoneid=446&amp;loc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.freightnews.co.za%2Farticle%2Faustralia-slaps-hefty-fine-oil-tanker&amp;referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&amp;cb=a4d962cd5c\" alt=\"\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<p><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>Amsa found evidence the food and drinking water were not of appropriate quality, quantity and\u00a0nutritional value for seafarers. It\u2019s also understood a seafarer was not provided with adequate\u00a0medical care after being injured on board.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Amsa detained the ship for multiple breaches of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) and the operator has been directed to pay the outstanding wages and address the deficiencies.<\/p>\n<p>Amsa\u2019s executive director of operations, Michael Drake, said the seafarers had repeatedly not been paid\u00a0at regular intervals and two crew members had expired Seafarer Employment Agreements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShips visiting Australian ports are on notice that if we find deliberate underpaying of crew\u00a0they can expect penalties,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Source: https:\/\/www.freightnews.co.za\/article\/australia-slaps-hefty-fine-oil-tanker<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Liberian oil tanker, Neptune.
